Explore the landscaped deer park, mature woodland and meres by bike, on horseback or on foot and you’ll gain a fascinating insight into the wealth of the flora and fauna that flourish on this 2,000 acre site, 1000 acres of which is open to the public. The meres provide a nicely soggy wetland for resident and migrating birds as well being a valuable habitat for rare plants and wildflowers; they’re also used for sailing and fishing. Go for a ramble, either on your own or on a Ranger-guided walk, and you’re bound to glimpse the skittish, delicate-limbed fallow deer that roam freely through the parkland. There’s badgers and foxes, bats and birds, St Kilda and Soay sheep grazing lazily on the springy tussocks, secluded copses that are perfect for a picnic, and a thrilling – and free! - adventure playground suitable for all ages from toddlers to teens.
