One of England’s loveliest historic houses, Gawsworth Hall is a superb example of a black-and-white half-timbered Tudor manor. Now occupied by the Richards family, who are delighted to share their home with the public, the estate is stuffed full of fascinating history: it was the site of a notorious duel in 1712, and was home to the country’s last ever professional jester, the eccentric Samuel Johnson, who lies buried in ‘Maggoty Johnson’s Wood.” Craft fairs, Bank Holiday family activities and an annual open-air theatre season make exploring Gawsworth Hall a real joy for visitors of all ages and interests.
