The settlement of Rostherne, which is approached by tree-lined lanes, consists of a group of well-kept brick houses and some thatched cottages. Apple Tree Cottage is one to really look out for which has a brick exterior and wattle and daub underneath.
The church and village were linked with the Egertons of nearby Tatton Park and at one time the community was a classic example of an estate village, where many inhabitants were dependent on the lord of the manor for their livelihood.
The settlement is mentioned in the Domesday Book as 'Rodestorne' and is derived from the Old Norse personal name of Raudr - so 'Raud's thornbush'.
